my first d&d campaign

04-08-25 I played my first DnD campaign on Sunday (4/6/25) and it was very fun! I've had a lot of anxiety about starting DnD with random people, especially in spaces that haven't been setup to be safe spaces for marginalized people. I found a D&D discord community called Dungeons & Darlings that's very welcoming, beginner friendly, and femme-centered (nonbinary & trans people are welcome). It was intentionally created as a space to engage in D&D without dealing with toxic masculinity, which is what I wanted .

The campaign was really fun! Me and & 3 other players went through a beginner dungeon using Foundry as the virtual tabletop, just learning the game as we went. I played a level 1 Drow Fighter (Archer) named Diamond Hueborn.

Background

  • Diamond and her father Norvuh live as nomads, hunting and gathering what they need while constantly traveling around, never settling in one place for too long.
  • She loves this lifestyle because it lets her explore, fight, and learn about the land.
  • On travels Norvuh teaches her of the history of the lands, how to fight & hunt various animals.
  • Sometimes would see Norvuh staring off towards the East every so often, looking tense.
  • After a bad hunt Norvuh ends up injured by beast and they are forced to seek help in a small town nearby called Spinne. Norvuh seems deeply uncomfortable with this, wanting to leave as soon as he can manage to move again. Says they have to keep going.
  • To heal him she needs to get a rare medicine that can cleanse powerful toxins said to only be found in dangerous dungeons.
  • Ventures out in hopes of finding the medication and finding out more about what her father is running away from or towards

Diamond Hueborn character sheet

The party consisted of 1 rogue, 2 fighters, and 1 wizard. Despite us having 2 fighters our rogue embodied the spirit of a fighter more than we did. Each time they failed a slight of hand check or their lockpicking didn't work, they used their crowbar to just brute force open the door . I'm not sure if mechanically that should be allowed but our DM was kind enough to let the foolishness happen. I felt inspired by our rogue - they were constantly trying new things and having fun with it! I was pretty nervous since I couldn't decide if I wanted to try to focus on roleplaying or just playing with the mechanics, so I hesitated to make any big swings . While exploring I found a talking doll that can say a short phrase depending on a condition I set. I never used it, but I wanted to use it as bait to distract monsters by making it scream like a scared child. It took us around 2 hours to get through the dungeon and we were obviously not ready to end it there. We lingered around the exit before finally deciding to leave. One of my favorite moments is when our rogue decided to roll like a cannonball through the exit portal. I'm happy this was my first experience and I'm excited to play again.

glad I played!
