This story puts a spin on typical fantasy romance iskeai stories by adding in a game-like system. I typically hate seeing these in stories, especially in this time period since the society these women are living in is already restrictive enough, but this story uses it well. It only shows up after certain events have happened to warn or reward Edith (the FL), so the game system doesn't intervene and take away her agency during critical moments. I like how Edith and Killian's relationship contrasts Rhyse & Cliff's relationship. There's a genuine trust and care thats developed that's really comforting to see, however that's not how the relationship starts.
Killian straight up HATES Edith. He calls her a snake at
one point and he hasn't even really talked to her
! Edith's
family basically used her as a dress-up-doll to advertise their
wealth and constantly abused her at home, then when she marries
into the Rigelhof family she's treated like a threat/spy because
of her family's reputation. This is the main source of angst in
the story & I think it's done well, but it's always a
disappointment to see the FL be ridiculed, neglected, and
disregarded by the same people that will eventually become her
saviors. Despite Killian's constant mistreatment Edith seems to
easily overlook it because "if asshole, why hot?". It's
irritating every time she does that, especially knowing the
environment she's stuck in.
Overall the art and angst is the real appeal of this story, not the romance or worldbuilding. I enjoyed it enough to read it all but the ending was very unsatisfying for all the LITERAL TORTURE Edith went through (all of the trigger warnings are things that happened only to Edith :D ).
